How to use it
Type part of a county name and pick it from the list, choose a direction and press Show. The map zooms to the counties involved and the list ranks the 20 largest flows, each of 20 returns or more. The address bar keeps your choice, so the link can be shared or bookmarked.
What the numbers mean
Returns are individual income tax returns that the IRS matched across the 2022 and 2023 filing seasons; one return is roughly one household. The share is the flow divided by all returns that moved in (or out), including foreign moves and flows too small to be listed. Miles are straight-line distances between county centers. Counties where the IRS withheld a total have no tracer entry; they still appear as partners of other counties. More on the method in How to read the data.
